Purple Passion asparagus is a unique variety known for its vibrant purple spears, sweeter flavor, and lower fiber content compared to green types. It produces thick, tender spears that are excellent for fresh eating and cooking. This variety is cold-hardy, vigorous, and productive, making it well suited for home gardens and market production. The purple color fades to green when cooked, but the sweetness remains.
Care Instructions
Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong spear production.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during spear production and establishment. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Soil: Well-draining, sandy or loamy soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Avoid heavy or compacted soils.
Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring before spears emerge. A second light feeding after harvest supports fern growth.
Pruning: Do not harvest in the first year. After harvest season, allow ferns to grow to feed the crown. Cut back ferns in late fall or early spring after they turn yellow or brown.
Mulching: Apply mulch such as straw or compost to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect crowns over winter.
Support: No support required, though tall ferns may benefit from light support in windy areas.
Pollination: Not required for spear production.
Harvesting: Begin light harvesting in the second year and full harvesting in the third year. Harvest spears when they are 6–8 inches tall by snapping or cutting at ground level.
