Description

Balsor’s Hardy blackberry is a cold-hardy, productive variety known for its reliable yields and good-quality black fruit. It produces medium to large berries with a balanced sweet flavour, suitable for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. This variety is well adapted to colder climates and is valued for its strong growth and consistent performance.

Care Instructions

Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best fruit production.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruit development. Water deeply during dry periods.

Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal.

Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen.

Pruning: After harvest, remove canes that have fruited. Train and tie new canes for next season’s crop. Prune annually to maintain airflow and manage plant size.

Mulching: Mulch with straw, wood chips, or shredded bark to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots.

Support: Requires a trellis, stakes, or wire system to support canes and improve air circulation and harvesting.

Pollination: Self-fertile. Pollinated by bees and other insects. No hand pollination required.

Harvesting: Harvest in mid to late summer when berries are fully black, glossy, and detach easily. Pick regularly during peak season.
