Description
Dwarf cherry plum is a compact fruit tree that produces small, cherry-sized plums with a sweet to sweet-tart flavour. It grows best in full sun (6–8+ hours) and prefers well-draining, fertile soil, tolerating a wider pH range than most stone fruits.
Trees usually begin fruiting 2–3 years after planting, with harvest in mid to late summer. Despite their size, mature dwarf trees can yield 20–40 lbs of fruit per season. They are valued for their manageable height, ornamental spring blossoms, and suitability for small spaces or containers.
Regular watering during establishment, annual pruning for shape and airflow, and good drainage are key to healthy growth and consistent fruiting.
Care Instructions
Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering and fruit production.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply during dry periods. Avoid consistently wet soil.
Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Loamy soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Slightly acidic to neutral pH works well.
Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring before growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring while dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and shape to maintain size and airflow.
Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Support: Young trees may need staking for the first year or two. Mature trees usually do not require support.
Pollination: Some varieties are self-fertile, but fruit production improves with a compatible plum or cherry plum nearby.
Harvesting: Fruit ripens in mid to late summer. Harvest when fully colored and slightly soft. Fruit should detach easily when ripe.
