Description

Anjou pear is a hardy, dependable European pear prized for its excellent cold tolerance and long storage life. The fruit has smooth green skin and fine-textured, juicy flesh with a mild, sweet flavor that improves after harvest. Anjou pears are typically picked while firm and ripen beautifully in storage, making them one of the best pears for long-term keeping. Under proper cold storage conditions, fruit can be stored for several months without losing quality. The trees are vigorous, productive, and well suited to colder growing regions, reliably producing high-quality fruit where less hardy varieties may struggle. Anjou pears are ideal for fresh eating, baking, canning, and winter use, making them a valuable choice for home growers and commercial orchards alike

Care Instructions

Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong growth and good fruit production.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply during dry periods, especially during fruit development. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Loamy soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Slightly acidic to neutral pH works well.

Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring before growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring while dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain an open structure.

Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

Support: Young trees may need staking for the first year or two. Mature trees usually do not require support.

Pollination: Not self-fertile. Requires a compatible pear variety nearby, such as Bartlett or Bosc, for fruit production.

Harvesting: Harvest in late summer to early fall when fruit is mature but still firm. Pears ripen off the tree after picking.
