Description

Purple raspberries are a hybrid between red and black raspberries, producing large, deep purple berries with a rich, sweet-tart flavor. They are vigorous, hardy, and productive, combining the sweetness of red raspberries with the deeper flavor of black types. Berries are excellent for fresh eating, jams, baking, and freezing. Plants form strong canes and are well suited for home gardens and small-scale production.

Care Instructions

Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best growth and fruit production.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruiting. Water deeply during dry periods.

Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal.

Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen.

Pruning: Similar to black raspberries. After harvest, remove canes that have fruited. Tip-prune new canes in early summer to encourage branching. Thin out weak or crowded canes.

Mulching: Mulch with straw, wood chips, or shredded bark to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots.

Support: Use a trellis, stakes, or wire system to support canes and keep fruit off the ground.

Pollination: Self-fertile. Pollinated by bees and other insects. No hand pollination required.

Harvesting: Harvest in mid to late summer when berries are deep purple and detach easily. Pick every few days during peak season.
