Description
Prelude is an early-season red raspberry known for its sweet, classic raspberry flavour with good balance, ripening earlier than most varieties. It grows best in full sun and prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5–6.5.
It is a primocane-bearing variety that produces a heavy early-summer crop on floricanes and a lighter fall crop on primocanes. Harvest typically begins in late spring to early summer, often 1–2 weeks ahead of standard summer raspberries. Yields are strong, averaging 1–2 lbs per cane.
Prelude is very cold-hardy, disease-resistant, and reliable, making it an excellent choice for northern climates. Consistent watering, mulching, and proper pruning help maximize fruit size and overall productivity.
Care Instructions
Light: Full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply when the topsoil feels dry, especially during fruit development.
Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Avoid soggy conditions.
Fertilizing: Apply balanced fertilizer or compost in early spring before new growth starts. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
Pruning: Remove old, dead, or diseased canes annually. After fruiting, prune spent canes and thin remaining canes to improve airflow.
Mulching: Use organic mulch like straw, wood chips, or bark to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature.
Support: Provide trellis, stakes, or wire support to keep canes upright and ease harvesting.
Pollination: Self-fertile and pollinated by bees and insects. No hand pollination needed.
Harvesting: Main crop ripens in early summer (mid-June to July), with a possible smaller late summer to fall crop on new canes. Pick berries when fully red and easy to detach.
