Description

Crimson Cherry rhubarb is a cold-hardy, early-producing variety known for its deep red stalks and mild, less tart flavor compared to traditional green types. It is vigorous, long-lived, and highly productive once established. The tender, flavorful stalks are excellent for pies, jams, sauces, and fresh use. This variety performs well in cooler climates and can produce for many years with proper care.

Care Instructions

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best production occurs with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Do not allow soil to dry out completely, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with high organic matter is ideal. Slightly acidic to neutral pH works well.

Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Rhubarb is a heavy feeder and benefits from annual soil enrichment.

Pruning: Remove flower stalks as they appear to encourage stronger leaf and stalk growth. Cut back foliage in late fall after it dies back.

Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch such as straw or compost to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect crowns over winter.

Support: No support required.

Pollination: Not required. Plants are grown for their stalks, not fruit.

Harvesting: Begin harvesting lightly in the second year, fully in the third year. Pull or cut stalks when they are 10–15 inches long. Do not harvest more than one-third of the plant at a time.
